Description:
Cambodia is an amazing and unique place to volunteer or intern abroad. Cambodia is now one of the must-visit destinations in South East Asia. With its pristine beaches, ancient temples and exotic jungle, it's easy to see why its turbulent history is now becoming an increasingly distant memory. This beautiful country is at peace, and Cambodians are focused on building a positive future. Visit Cambodia and you will be amazed by the juxtaposition of vibrant cities, beautiful scenery and famous historical landmarks like Angkor Wat.
Cambodia is about two thirds the size of the UK, but one of the least-populated Asian countries, bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. With a coastline on the tropical Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia occupies the heart of South-East Asia.
Volunteering on a Placement in Cambodia
Projects Abroad is based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's spirited and charming capital city. Many areas of Phnom Penh are booming; the city has an elegant riverfront and lively nightlife, and its people are friendly, dignified and optimistic. Despite this, its hard to escape the poverty and the fact that many Cambodians are still struggling to survive.
Join a Care project and you'll work with orphanages and street-children, to help give young Cambodians a brighter future. Furthermore, as the country is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, the desire to learn English has never been greater. We also offer volunteering abroad opportunities for Teaching within the classrooms of the orphanages we work with. Along with that, our sporty volunteers have a chance to coach school sports, sort of like P.E., while abroad.
Our placements in Medicine, at Phnom Penh's state hospitals, are suitable for medical students who have completed at least one year of medical studies.
If you want to explore the culture and history of Cambodia, consider joining the Khmer Project - part of our Culture & Community Projects - which immerses you in the Khmer culture and offers the chance to take part in music, dance, cooking, and art classes.
Highlights:
The capital city of Cambodia is Phnom Penh, a vibrant and fascinating city that is located in the southern part of the country. Cambodia's total area is 69,898 sq. miles (181,035 sq. km), and the population has reached 14 million people. Besides the capital city, Cambodia boasts many attractions that include beautiful beaches, an exotic jungle to explore and the world famous gathering of temples in Angkor, all well worth a visit.
Our volunteers in Cambodia live in shared apartments rented by Projects Abroad. The apartments are modern, bright and clean, and can hold about 10 volunteers at a time. One apartment is in the North of the city, in the same building as the local Projects Abroad office, and one is in the South. Volunteers will be placed according to where their placements are located to allow for the easiest commute.
In addition, this project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
