Description: Volunteers are needed at an outdoor center in New Zealand. They have constant need for volunteers willing to commit a minimum of one month to assist with general program and grounds maintenance. For volunteers with experience leading outdoors trips or with specific outdoor skills, there are opportunities to learn new skills and possibly get experience leading trips with one of the most reputed organizations in the South Pacific. Volunteers can also earn credits that can be used towards participating in one of their week-long courses. Specific examples of activities available: rock climbing, river and sea kayaking, mountaineering, ski touring, trekking, backpacking, bushcraft and bush survival.

Outdoor Leadership School in New Zealand

Highlights: Volunteers work a full week, but the workload is light enough that you could take a week or two off at any point to travel the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Staff usually spends the weekends outdoors practicing skills and playing in nature. On site there are also a variety of recreational facilities such as a community center, a swimming pool, a spa pool and an impressive outdoor video and book library.

Past volunteers have equated the organization to a New Zealand NOLS or Outward Bound type experience.

Qualifications / Skills Needed:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Self-motivated, responsible and pro-active individuals.
- Proof of travel insurance necessary.

Intern Types: Education, Environmental Studies and Tourism

Language: English

Cost in US$: $750 plus living and travel expenses

Cost Includes: Food, Housing, In-country orientation/Training, In-country staff support, Pre-departure orientation/Training, Registration fees and Written materials pre-departure

The $750 is a one time fee that includes the internship placement, pre-departure orientation and reliable in-country resources. The school provides free room and board in exchange for work. However volunteers are required to supply their own food on weekends.

Typical Volunteer: Typically our volunteers are gap year students aged 17-25. Volunteers placed by our organization are eager, outgoing, take initiative and are dedicated to international and local service work. Our volunteer placements are geared towards the backpacker traveling lifestyle.

Age Range: 17-35

This Program is open to American, Australian, Canadian, European, Kiwi, South African and World Wide Participants. This Program is also open to Families, Couples and Individuals.
