Description:
Join World Endeavors in the rural communities of Guatemala to help improve the education of local teenagers and children. Make a difference in a child's life by volunteering your time and expertise in a variety of subjects. World Endeavors volunteers may act as classroom assistants or as independent teachers, depending on their comfort level and local need.
Multiple opportunities in the teaching field are available. Volunteers can teach English, which provides locals with a valuable skill - a skill that can provide economic opportunity and growth potential to Guatemala's impoverished communities. Previous experience in teaching or knowledge of the Spanish language is not necessary for English teaching placements.
Volunteers with some Spanish proficiency also have the choice to teach alternate subjects, such as science, math, history, art, music, sports, or many others. A thorough knowledge of the subject matter is required for this option.
Highlights:
Upon arrival in Guatemala, participants are met at the airport and given transportation to their volunteering location. They will receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the town and the surrounding area, Guatemalan culture, and their program.
Participants will stay with local Guatemalan host families. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having visitors stay with them. All host family accommodation includes 3 meals per day. Living in a host family setting is the best way to practice your Spanish, and participants frequently make friendships that can last a lifetime.
Qualifications / Skills Needed:
No Spanish skills are required to teach English. Volunteers who wish to teach a subject of their choice (examples: science, math, history, art) should have a minimum of intermediate Spanish proficiency.
A minimum 6 week commitment is required for the teaching program.
